Welcome to Modoc National Forest, an oasis of mountains, lakes, rivers, pine woodlands, canyons, lava beds, high desert plateaus, and meadows in northeastern California.

Forest History: Both the National Forest and the county in which it is located are named after the Modoc Native American tribe who lived in the region for many centuries. In 1904 President Theodore Roosevelt created the Warner Mountains and Modoc Forest Reserves. In 1908, he merged them together to create the Modoc National Forest.

Here are a few forest facts. The elevation ranges from as low as 4,300 to as high as 9,934 feet ASL. Precipitation ranges between 4.94 and 20.8 inches annually with an average of 12 inches annually.

For the lover of the outdoors Modoc National Forest boasts over 70 miles of multipurpose trails, the Cedar Pass Snow Park, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
