Welcome to the San Juan National Forest nestled in the majestic Rocky Mountains of southwest Colorado!
Forest History: The San Juan National Forest started out as the San Juan Forest Reserve in 1905 under the Proclamation of President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1918, the San Juan and Durango Forests were consolidated administratively and in 1920 President Woodrow Wilson signed the legislation into law combining them into the San Juan National Forest.
Flora and Fauna: San Juan National Forest helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the forest boundaries include aspens, pines, thistles, and asters. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include bears, deer, coyotes, mountain lions, squirrels, and bald eagles. Please treat their home with respect.
