Steep Rock Preserve

Washington Depot, Connecticut

Welcome to Steep Rock Preserve located on the banks of the Spepaug River in Washington Depot, Connecticut. At nearly 1,000 acres in size this is the largest preserve owned by the Steep Rock Association. One of the preserve's most unique features is the historic 235 foot Railroad Tunnel that was constructed from 1871 until 1872 for the Shepaug Valley Railroad to meet the nation's growing demand for coal. One can also see a historic house from 1892 or enjoy nice views from the park's high point at 776 feet above sea level.
