Welcome to the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge, located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and spanning across sections of eastern Alabama and western Georgia.

Refuge History: Before the arrival of European settlers, the land in this region was home to the Muscogee Creek tribe whose villages dotted the riverbanks. In the 19th century, European settlers arrived and set up the town of Irwinton (after it's founder) and a port for Chattahoochee River Steamboats. Later the town's name was changed to Eufaula in honor of the local tribe. Over time the local hardwood trees fell victim to farms as the town grew. After WWII ended many of the farms were reforested. In 1963, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dammed up the Chattahoochee to create Lake Walter F. George. The local residents demanded a safe haven for the migratory birds and other wild critters and in 1964 their wish was granted with the creation of the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge.

Wildlife: This refuge is home to numerous wild critters including over 280 bird species. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts many hiking trails and water sports opportunities. Come on out and explore!
