Florida State Forests

Welcome to Welaka State Forest located on the banks of the St. John's River in Putnam County Florida.

Forest History: The history of the Welaka State Forest dates back to 1935 when the Federal Government started the Welaka Forestry and Wildlife Conservation Project under the Federal Resettlement Administration. In the 1940's the property was transferred to the University of Florida and was used for many scientific studies. In 1992, the State of Florida acquired the land.

Flora and Fauna: Welaka State Forest is dominated by three types of pine trees, pond pines, slash pines, and longleaf pines. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include alligators, squirrels, raccoons, white-tailed deer, and hawks. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors Welaka State Forest boasts miles of multipurpose trails, numerous campsites, and much more. Come on out and explore!
