The Hauntings of Erie, Pennsylvania
Human beings are naturally drawn to the idea of something they cannot explain. Haunted houses and urban legends remain popular because of this and consistently bring in people throughout the world who want to experience something they don't understand. Many towns claim to have objects or locations that are prone to paranormal activity. Erie is one of these places and thrill seekers in Pennsylvania don't have to go far in this area to find the haunted thrills they are looking for.
Erie Cemetery
Erie Cemetery is one of the most popular haunted locations in Erie. Paranormal activity is not centered in one spot, as there have been many who have cited strange experiences throughout the cemetery. There is a spot in the cemetery where there are tombstones arranged in a circle and it is said that this is where a group of Satan worshipers were dragged down below ground by Satan himself. Many of the tombstones appear to have scorch marks etched on their sides. There is also a dark mausoleum that looks to be burned with no name and cryptic writing on the side. Reports have also been made of a giant, black dog running around the cemetery that disappears a few moments after roaming by.
Gannon University Frat House
It has been reported that a frat house on Gannon University's campus has experienced paranormal activity before. During a Halloween party, a strange figure wearing a black cowboy hat was seen roaming throughout the party. As it ascended upstairs, a party member followed the figure. Once they reached the top, the "man" raised his hat and disappeared. Moments later, the house began to experience strange behavior, such as doors opening and closing, windows shutting, and strange noises. The figure then reappeared and warned everyone to "Get Out!" before disappearing again into the night.
The Old Crowley Mansion
A list of Erie's haunted happenings isn't complete without mentioning the Crowley Mansion. Said to be the first haunted house in Erie, the home was originally inhabited by the wealthy Crowley family. The family was plagued with tragedy, as murder, illness, and death were constantly attached to home's inhabitants. One of the family members, murdered by his wife, was said to have remained to haunt is wife by destroying everything in the home every night at midnight. Numerous families have come and gone since and all that is left today is ruins of the former mansion on the lot on which it stood. Still, those who go back to site are often filled with immediate sadness and depression once they step foot on those grounds.
Haunted locations are special in a very unique way. There are not many things that are universally intriguing to people from all phases of life. The idea of being able to experience something outside the typical norm and gaining a glimpse into a world outside of our own has a way of drawing people in. This is what the town of Erie, Pennsylvania does and why the legends surrounding its haunted places are only growing.
