Ashe Beach Park

Chicago, Illinois

Welcome to Ashe Beach Park, located on the shore's of beautiful Lake Michigan in Chicago's South Shore Community. The City of Chicago first purchased this land in the late 1970's and developed it into a beach park in the 1980's with some financial assistance from the State of Illinois. In 1993 it was decided to rename the park in memory of Arthur Ashe, a man who was ranked as the world's top tennis player and competed in the Davis Cup, U.S. Open, Wimbleton Open, and Australian Open. Ashe was an active member of the African American community and died of AIDS earlier in 1993.
