The City of Chicago first purchased the land that is now Beehive Park with assistance from the Federal Government in 1969, the same year we landed on the moon. They wanted to provide recreational space in the struggling Woodlawn Community. In time they turned this once vacant lot into a space with a playground and a spray pool for hot summer days. In 1999 the park was named Beehive Park in recognition of the local Beehive Jazz Club which played not too far away in the mid 20th century. Some of the musicians who performed in this club include Lester Young, Charlie Parker, and Art Hodes.
