Bessemer Park
Welcome to Chicago's Bessemer Park. This piece of land was one of a series of parks that were created with a new vision conceived by Superintendent J. Frank Foster that would go beyond the purpose of the original city park and provide various services to the citizens including vocational training, hot meals, and health care. And it could not have come at a better time because many of Chicago's new immigrants were not finding the "American Dream" that they were hoping to see and instead found poor living and working conditions. Some of the other Chicago parks that were created in Foster's new vision include Sherman, Hamilton, and Davis Parks. This urban park, located just a mile away from one of the southside's productive steel mills, was named for an Englishman who was a pioneer in the development of steel, Sir. Henry Bessemer.
Today this park offers many opportunities for the residents and visitors of Chicago including a swimming pool, a sprayground, basketball courts, and much more. Come on out and have fun.
