Welcome to Chicago's Durkin Park located in the southwest neighborhood of Ashburn. Up until about the mid-20th century when an industrial boom entered the region, Ashburn remained relatively unpopulated. In response to the boom in residential construction concerned citizens began to lobby the City of Chicago in 1957 for new parks in their area. Before the year's end their wish was granted when the city purchased several blocks of land. In 1962, after three years of planning and construction, Durkin Park opened to the public. This park was named for Martin Durkin, a local resident who served as Secretary of Labor under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Today this park boasts many amenities for residents and visitors of Chicago including lighted baseball fields, a roller-hockey court, and much more. Come on out and have fun!
