Welcome to Ellis Park located in Chicago's Douglas Community. This urban park was named for a man named Samuel Ellis, who lived in Chicago in the 1830's and operated a tavern on 35th street. In 1855 Ellis sold some property he donated a piece of land that he owned to the City of Chicago to be used as a public park. The surrounding neighborhood was very affluent in the 19th century but by the early 20th century the rich residents began to move to other parts of the city and their once fancy homes got turned into apartments and lower rent housing. Ellis Park too was suffering at the time but in 1906 nationally renouned landscape architect Jens Jensen helped redesign the park, which was 3 acres at the time. In the late 20th century additional lands were purchased and the park tripled in size. Today Ellis Park has two full basketball courts, two tennis courts, an informal soccer field, and much more. Come out and have fun!
