Welcome to Chicago's Mary Richardson Jones Park located in the Near South, Community. Originally titled Indigo Bird Park, the City of Chicago renamed this park in 2005 in honor of Mary Richardson Jones, a woman who was born to a freed African American Blacksmith and grew up in the Chicago region. Jones was an abolitionist who played a very big role in the Underground Railroad and helped to free many enslaved people and even got a chance to meet Susan B. Anthony. When she and her husband first moved to Chicago in 1845 the city had a population of 12,000 and only 140 of those were African American. Today Chicago boasts a sizable African American community and a variety of other ethnic and cultural groups.
