Welcome to Chicago's Merrimac Park, located in the Dunning Community. In the late 19th century this piece of land belonged to a hotel owner named Henry Kolze who turned the land into a local tourist attraction with music at night and beer selling for 5 cents a glass. In the 1950's the Chicago Park district purchased the land and tore down some of the sites older buildings and replaced them with athletic fields, courts, and playgrounds. The building that was not demolished, the old dining hall, was converted into a fieldhouse but it was torn down and replaced in the late 1960's. Local residents did not favor naming the park Kolze's Grove so the name Merrimac, a Native American word for Sturgeon, was chosen instead. Today this park boasts a sprayground, ballfields, and more. Come out and have fun.
