Theodore Wirth Park
Welcome to one of the largest and oldest parks in Minneapolis, the beautiful Theodore Wirth Park. The City of Minneapolis first purchased this land in 1889 and named it Saratoga Park but that name was changed to Glenwood Park the following year. In 1938, nearly half a century after the park's creation, the City finally gave the park it's present daiy name, in honor of a Swiss Immigrant who came to the Twin Cities region and served as the parks superintendent for nearly three decades from 1906 until 1935. Wirth had previously held the same position in Hartford, Connecticut, a man named Charles Loring, for whom a park is also named, helped Wirth get his job and the City of Minneapolis was better off because of it. Today this park offers numerous recreational opportunities year round including a swimming beach, boat launches, multipurpose trails, a snowboard park with jumps, and much more. Come out and have fun!
