Newtown Battlefield State Park
Welcome to New York's Newtown Battlefield State Park located in the Finger Lakes Region near Elmira. As the name implies a battle was fought here once, in August of 1779 when the Continental Army engaged in a battle with 1000 Native Americans, the British, and the Loyalist Rangerse. It was one of the largest offensive campaigns in the American Revolution and the motive was to punish Native Americans who had sided with the British. On the battle's centennial in 1879 a stone monument was placed on top of the hill. In more recent history the Civilian Conservation Corps helped build many of the park's facilities.
