Tunnel Hill State Trail, Illinois
45 miles of biking paradise! Tunnel Hill State Trail stretches 45 miles between Harrisburg to Karnak Illinois. This area provides bikers with a safe, scenic, and historic place to ride.
Once occupied and traveled by the railroad, in 1991 the State of Illinois was given right-of-away between Harrisburg and Karnak and developed the trail. Crushed limestone and gravel cover the trails, and provide a smooth ride through the beautiful scenic Shawnee National Forest.
As a mom safety is always my concern, I feel outdoor recreation should be safe for all ages, this is why I fell in love with Tunnel Hill Trail. From Vienna Ill to Tunnel Hill, the trail winds through the woods keeping travelers off the main roads, which creates a safe ride for those little bikers just learning.
Scenery, always a plus when you are looking for a place to spend the day. Along the trail there 23 picturesque trestles inviting travelers to stop and enjoy, handrails and guardrails safely surround each trestle. The view from each trestle is just breathtaking especially early spring and late fall as the trees begin to change.
Tunnel Hill State Trail is a day-use trail only; there is drinking water, privy toilets, and parking areas making the trail more users friendly. The trail welcomes cyclist, hikers, joggers, and someone just wanting a peaceful place to go for a walk. Horses, motorized vehicles, and hunting are not allowed on the trail for the safety of the users.
The official site office for Tunnel Hill State Trail is located at State Highway 146 on the east side of Vienna Illinois.
Have an Adventurous Day.
