Angelina National Forest
Welcome to Angelina National Forest, sprawling across Nacogdoches, Jasper, San Augustine, and Angelina Counties in the heart of east Texas.
Forest History: Evidence unearthed by archeologists tells us that the first known human inhabitants of the Angelina National Forest arrived in the region over 8,000 years ago. One of the first white settlers in the region was a John H. Graham whose grave lies within the forest boundaries. Some other historic sites within the forest include the old Aldridge Sawmill on the banks of the Neches River. In 1934, the Texas State Legislature approved a resolution urging the U.S. Government to purchase National Forest land in the state. A year later in 1935, the Government began to purchase the first tracts of what would become the Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Sabine, and Angelina National Forests. Today, the U.S. Forest Service and the Texas State Forest Service work together to manage these lands for sustainable timber harvesting, wildlife protection, and recreation.
Wildlife: The Angelina National Forest is the home to numerous wild critters including deer, squirrels, wild turkeys, bald eagles, quails, ducks, and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors the Angelina National Forest boasts the Sam Rayburn Reservoir, miles of hiking trails, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
