Welcome to Davis Mountains State Park located in Fort Davis, Texas at about the halfway point between Guadalupe Mountains and Big Bends National Parks. The Davis Mountains themselves were formed by volcanic activity over 65 million years ago back when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth, at a time known as the Tertiary geologic period. Fort Davis itself is named after Jefferson Davis, who served as the U.S. Secretary of War and later president of the Confederate States. The fort was active for a 37 year period from 1854 until 1891. In 1961 the U.S. Department of Interior placed it on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of Davis Mountains State Park's amenities were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Davis Mountains State Park has a range of elevations and thus a diversity of plant life. At the higher elevations grow oaks, junipers, and ponderosa pines. At the lower elevations grow Emory Oaks, Junipers, and wildflowers. Some of the wild animals that can be seen at Davis Mountains State Park include rock squirrels, coyotes, and white-wing doves. Please treat their home with respect.
For the recreational enthusiast Davis Mountains State Park boasts over seven miles of multipurpose trails, scenic views of the Davis and Chinati Mountains, and more. Come out and explore!
