McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge located on the Texas Gulf Coast near Sabine.
Refuge History: The first human inhabitants of McFadden National Wildlife Refuge arrived over 10,000 years ago and were probably members of the Karankawa Tribe who hunted the land's game and fished it's waters. Some of the game they hunted included now extinct animals such as the woolly mammoth and saber-toothed tiger. The discarding of shells over many centuries helped provide places for trees to take root and for migrating songbirds to rest.
Wildlife: McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous wild animals including orioles, vireos, gray foxes, coyotes, raccoons, muskrats, otters, bobcats, skunks, and alligators. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge boasts waters stocked with flounder, red drum, and alligator gar, a birding trail, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
