Welcome to Sabine National Forest, a pine forest oasis located in eastern Texas.
Forest History: The first human inhabitants in and around what is now Sabine National Forest arrived here over 10,000 years ago. These ranged from nomadic hunters to the southeast woodland cultures. In the late 1500's the first known Europeans, Spanish Explorers, ventured into the region. The local tribes they met were mostly dependent on crop, occupied large villages, and had complex systems of religion and government. The name that the Spanish gave these people was "Tejas." This is how the state got it's name. Throughout the 1600's and 1700's the Spanish tried unsuccessfully to establish missions in the region and many conflicts between the whites and natives erupted. By the turn of the 19th century, only one tribe remained, and they were soon forced out to Oklahoma. In the late 1800's much of the land was used for timber harvesting and by the early 20th century the railroads had accelerated the timber harvests. In 1934, the Texas State Legislature urged Washington to purchase lands in east Texas to create a National Forest. In 1935 they got their wish when the government began to purchase lands in Texas. Sabine National Forest was established.
For the lover of the outdoors Sabine National Forest boasts the Toledo Bend Reservoir (5th largest man-made reseroivr in the nation, miles of multipurpose trails, numerous campsites, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
