Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest
Welcome to the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest located on the Virginian Piedmont. Many species of plants grow in this forest including white oak, chestnut oak, sweet gum, and yellow poplar. Some of the parks wild animals include deer, turkey, and black bears. Forest History: The land that is now the forest has a long agricultural history. Today remnants of the past farming communities such as old cemeteries and homesteads can be seen in the forest. By the 1930’s much of the land had become eroded and unproductive. The Federal Government began making purchases under the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act in order to reforest the land and conserve it for future generations. In 1954 the land was transferred to the State of Virginia and the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest was established. Today the forest offers over 20 miles of multipurpose trails as well as hunting and fishing opportunities. Camping is not allowed in this forest. Come on out and have a blast!
