Welcome to the Cumberland State Forest located in Virginia's Piedmont!

Forest History: Up until the 1930's this land was used heavily for agricultural purposes until it became highly eroded and unproductive. During the Great Depression the Federal Government began to purchase the land under the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act in order to help conserve and reforest the land. In 1954 the land was transferred to the State of Virginia and Cumberland State Forest was established. The forest has a rich history and was the home of Col. Jesse Thomas, a hero in the Revolutionary War.

Today the forest offers numerous recreational opportunities and one must acquire a permit for horseback riding, biking, hunting, and fishing but a permit is not required for hiking and boating. The forest offers over 30 miles of trails. Come on out and have a blast!
