Welcome to a place that forms a mile wide barrier between the Back Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, False Cape State Park located in Virginia Beach. There is limited access to this park through the neighboring Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. In the 19th century, False Cape gained a reputation as a ship's graveyard. One of the area's first community's, Wash Woods, was built by survivors of a shipwreck using debris from the wreck. Throughout the 20th century up until the 1960's it was a popular destination for hunting clubs who came to take advantage of the abundance of waterfowl. In 1966 a study recommended that a portion of ocean frontage be made available for public usage and over 4,000 acres were purchased. Today an organization known as the Friends of False Cape State Park volunteers to help maintain the park. Come on out and have a blast!
