Governor Knowles State Forest

Welcome to a State Forest that protects the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, the Governor Knowles State Forest.
Forest History: The forest was established in 1970 as the St. Croix State Forest. In 1981 the name was changed to Governor Knowles State Forest in order to honor Warren P. Knowles an outdoorsman who served as a state senator, Lt. Governor, and Governor of Wisconsin. Throughout his career in politics he did many great things for conservation including his help to pass the Outdoor Recreation Act Program in 1961 to help generate money for land purchases.
Today the forest provides wildlife habitat for deer, black bears, showshoe hares, bald eagles, and other species. The forest also provides many great recreational opportunities and beautiful scenery. Come on out and have a blast!
