Basketball at Naomi Drenan and Grayson Skate Park
Basketball hotspot Naomi Drenan, in Charlotte NC, has open gym Monday through Friday from 3pm to close, with the exception of when special events are held in the gym. The rec. is a popular neighborhood hang out which quickly fills up as soon as school lets out. There are also adult games on Saturday and Sunday mornings. On Fridays, recreation center staff hooks up the score board and runs full court games. If a full court game is not being played then patrons may use any of the six goals in the gym. Naomi Drenan’s gymnasium also has a large bleacher area and a stage. For sunny days, there are an additional four courts outside in the back of the rec. center. Open gym is free for those under eighteen or still in high school and only $2 for those eighteen and over. Naomi Drenan is known for having serious balers and a high level of competition. Grayson Skate Park
If you’re in Charlotte NC and you love skateboarding, then do don’t miss a visit to Grayson Skate Park at 750 Beal St. Grayson is an outdoor, concrete park, with smooth transitions that tie together new and old school skating styles. For bowl riders, Grayson offers a Ten and a half foot deep end with tile and pool coping. A rectangular Six foot quarter pipe section is connected to the deep end by a hip and a waterfall section. It’s easy to get a speed and come up with great lines whether you skate regular of goofy footed.
The rest of the park is shaped like a valley with a transfer section in between to maintain speed. One transfer includes a grind box and a flat grind rail, while the other has two different size grind boxes and a pyramid corner. On One side of the valley features a One and a Half Foot gyro gap next to a ledge and a baby quarter pipe. The transitions to the other side include Five Foot quarter pipes, a tombstone, and speed ramps. On the other side of the valley there are Five Foot quarter pipes and speed ramps, with a Seven Foot speed ramp and an Eight Foot vert wall. The Five Foot quarter pipe next to the baby quarter pipe is a popular spot to launch big airs. Cost: Mecklenburg County Youth - $2, Mecklenburg County Adult - $5, Out of County Youth - $5, Out of County Adult - $8. Memberships are available. NC State Statute 99e requires that patrons wear helmets, elbow pads and knee pads at all times within the skate park. A liability waiver must be filled out by patrons on their first visit to the park (youth under age 18 must have the waiver completed by a parent/guardian and be notarized).
