Billings Park
Welcome to Billings Park, a small little urban greenspace located in downtown Syracuse, New York. In the beginning this park was known as Warren Park and was named for Revolutionary War Hero General Joseph Warren. In time it was renamed for the man who once owned the land, a carriage maker named Roger Billings who operated a local factory for nearly two decades from 1841-1859. In August of 1867, Billings donated a piece of his land to the City of Syracuse, and improvements were made in the years that followed. Today there are two war memorials standing in Billings Park, one for the veterans of the Spanish American War and the other for those of World War I. A plaque lays on the World War I Memorial and reads “This memorial is presented to the City of Syracuse… as a tribute to the heroes… who made the supreme sacrifice in the great war and grateful recognition of the esteem in which they held the citizens of this city…”
This park was RecPlanet place of the day on December 30, 2014.
