Some of the most beautiful beaches on Lake Michigan lie within the confines of Whitefish Dunes State Park in scenic Door Co. Wisconsin. Door County WI. is an all year outdoor playground. It is a peninsula that lies north east into Lake Michigan north of Green Bay WI. It reminds one a little of Cape Cod MA. On the shore line there are pine trees, long grasses, white sand beaches washed by beautiful roiling breakers that stretch north to south. But there is so much more to this park than the beaches. Dunes State Park is a day use park with no camping allowed. A daily vehicle sticker is required. The park is open year-round from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The main gate opens at 8 a.m.
Whitefish Dunes State Park strives to protect the Lake Michigan sand dunes and asks all visitors to use one or more of the 14 miles of trails throughout the park. The Red Trail takes you to the top of “Old Baldy” 93 feet above the lake and gives the hiker magnificent views of the lake and surrounding areas. The Braciopod Trail is an interpretative trail and ascends some of the steepest sand dunes on the Western Lake Michigan shoreline. The rock ledges at the top offer one of the most scenic views in all of Wisconsin. The Clark Lake Spur trail leads to Clark Lake from the Green/Yellow trail.
Of particular interest is a small but spectacular park farther north on Hwy 57, named Cave Point County Park.This easily overlooked place is neither a State or National park but a County park however it is very well worth the visit. This beautiful 19 acre park has picnic areas and rest rooms. But the main attraction are the 25 to 30 foot limestone cliffs facing East out into Lake Michigan. Here the wind and deep booming waters have formed sea caves and hollows into the cliff base. Out of the unusual rock formations grow stunted pines which can make great photo opportunities. There are no railings or handholds or fences so the edges of these cliffs must be approached with a lot of caution. During prolonged East winds the waves and spray can grow quite high slamming into the cliffs causing spectacular scenes. This is the wild side of Door County explore it along with the little villages and quaint harbors on the west side of the peninsula.
