Altitude, over 1075 feet above Fourth Ward Park
It sure has been a while since I last made a post. I used to have two kites, sadly The Spirit of Saint George was lost a couple of weeks ago in extremely high winds. Amelia IV I still have. I took her to Fourth Ward Park on Saturday November 15th and the wind was different on that day, in that it came from the east instead of the west, but that presented a unique opportunity.
WSB's tower stands over Fourth Ward Park and neighboring Freedom Parkway. A source I read online said that the tower is 1,075 feet tall. Having a wind blowing west meant that the kite went towards the tower instead of towards the Carter Center. A high wind on Saturday morning sent the string up at a high angle and I must have brought the kite withing 50 horizontal feet of the tower itself. She went above the tower tip, so that's a confirmed altitutde of nearly 1,100 feet. Flying near the tower presents a unique opportunity, it gives you a reference on altitude, but you have to know what you are doing to fly near a structure like that. It was a challenge, but a fun one! Sorry for the lack of pictures.
