Coast Guard Park
Welcome to Coast Guard Park located in Northbrook, Illinois near the local post office and the Somme Prairie Nature Preserve.
Park History: This park was first purchased in the late 1970's from the United States Government after it was declared surplus land. The rest of the surplus land went to the postal service and to the local Forest Preserve District. The district initially wanted to name it Olympian Park in honor of Olympic Speedskaters from Northbrook, but they never got the consent from the Olympic Committee. The park is located on Dundee Road which is a designated Blue Star Memorial Highway paying tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces. Also there was once a Coast Guard Radar Station on this land. Thus the district decided to name it Coast Guard Park and in 2002 a memorial garden and blue star marker were established inside the park.
In 2007 additional vegetation was planted in order to protect the garden from the wind and a rededication ceremony took place. Come on out and have fun!
