Bowne Playground
Welcome to New York City's Bowne Playground located in Queens off of Union Street. This small urban park was once the home of Walter Bowne, a man who served as a state senator and as mayor of New York City from 1828-1832. While he was mayor Bowne made voracious attempts to prevent the spread of cholera by making strict quarantine policies for those traveling in and out of the city. Unfortunately his efforts were unsuccessful and hundreds of New Yorkers died from the disease. It was not known how the disease was spread until 1883 when a German doctor named Robert Koch discovered it spread through contaminated waste. His house which once stood on this property burned down in 1925. Thus his house is no more but today this piece of land boasts a basketball court, a playground for the kids and more. Come out and have fun!
