A Visit to Cowell Ranch State Beach
Thursday, October, 17, 2013
jimwatkins

During my ongoing discoveries of the photographic beauty of Northern California (I’m a recent transplant from the Midwest), I stumble across these small, sometimes hidden beaches that dot the Pacific coastline. One such recent discovery was the Cowell Ranch State Beach, just south of Half Moon Bay.

I got there early, and that was a good thing; the parking lot just off the Pacific Coast Highway is very small. From the parking lot, it was a half mile hike down a gravel access road through...Read More

The Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic
Wednesday, September, 25, 2013

The Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic is the largest multi-day ride in the Northwest; 2013 marking the 34th annual ride.  My first time riding this event was 2012, making it a two day event with a friend, not too worried about timing - just being happy to be a part of it.  It's overwhelming to begin with as there are 10,000 riders that start off in 10 minute waves, if you haven't been on an organized ride, now is your time to start testing the waters!

I was amazed at how well organized the ride was, major stops along the way...Read More

Trail Running on the Kern River Parkway in Bakersfield California
Monday, August, 26, 2013
Chuck The Photographer

The Kern River Parkway covers about 15 miles.  Most of it runs along the Kern River, which unfortunately is usually dry due to agricultural diversion upstream.  The actual path along the parkway is blacktop and is heavily used by cyclists, walkers, runners etc.  The thing that makes this Parkway so appealing to me is that several miles of the eastern end of it has a dirt trail that more or less parallels the bike path for several miles.  As this video shows, it can be very challenging to run when the temperature is in the 100 deg range but is definitely doable.  In Kern County in general, spring through summer running any time of day requires close attention to...Read More

Cycling in Lisle, Illinois, a Western Suburb of Chicago

Today, August 22, 2013, I cycled about 15 miles in the town of Lisle, IL.  There is cycling routes in and near downtown Lisle and also in many of its neighborhoods.  There is also a cycling path, The Green Trail, that runs through Community Park.  Community Park has an extended trail system with a large pond and a prairie style wildflower - prairie plants area.  The Green Trail connects with other trails south of Lisle and one can cycle many miles with all of the extended trails.  Also, Lisle has a museum park in its downtown with a small late 1800's farm and also a railroad museum.

A Snowy Vacation at Big Bear Lake
Wednesday, August, 21, 2013
Julie B

It is true that in California you can surf and ski in the same day – at least from September to March. Big Bear Lake is just over two hours away from Santa Monica beach, so you could catch the waves in the morning then get out on the powder for lunchtime. Nestled in the San Bernardino mountains, Big Bear Lake boasts two winter resorts that are arguably the best places to ski or snowboard in California. It is definitely the best place to learn or to improve your technique: Bear Mountain has the region’s largest...Read More

The Wright Ride from Oak Park, IL
Tuesday, August, 20, 2013
JNJunk

On this last Sunday, August 18, 2013, I completed the thirty mile ride of the Wright Ride, sponsored by the Oak Park Bicyle Club of Oak Park, IL.  The ride started in downtown Oak Park, went south to Berwyn, then west through Riverside, Brookfield, Lagrange Park, and and stopping in Western Spring for a rest stop.   Each of these towns have great downtown areas.  The photos above were taken in Riverside.  Brookfield is famous for Brookfield Zoos, one of the most popular zoos in the United States.  Oak Park, just west of the western edge of Chicago and now a very diverse community, is the childhood home of Ernest Hemingway and also has homes designed by Frank...Read More
