During last weeks snow storm I went to my favorite place in Atlanta on snowy days, Candler Park. I first came here back in 1992 and have been back in 1996, 2000, 2002, 2008, 2010, and 2011. This time somebody had the clever idea of bringing a lawn chair out to be used for a sled. Riding it down the hill must have been like riding the luge in the Olympics, but it sure was fun. Always fun to go to the park and meet your neighbors and get your exercise. I even ran across one of my old students.
Night skiing deserves a quiet night. Although I take liberties with the original R.E.M. lyric, night skiing does, in fact, deserve a quiet night.
Keystone Resort offers a limited number of runs for skiing in the dark. I went last week for the first time at Keystone and had a blast. There were very few people and the quietness increased the odd sensation of skiing with sensory deprivation. The lack of depth perception because of the intense shadows heightens the rest of your senses and there were several times when I was flying down the hill that I thought, “oh boy, I’m in trouble if I take a tumble now.” But skiing in twilight is definitely worth the risk and...Read More
This morning I played a bit of hooky and got some runs in at Breckenridge, Colorado. I moved from Atlanta to lovely Summit County in March for a job and have been enjoying all that the Rockies have to offer, from hiking 14ers to braving today’s subzero temperatures to get some powder. We’ve been lucky to have a lot of snow for the season so far; although I wasn’t here last season, I heard that skiing this time last year was not good. It’s been snowing like crazy and well below freezing...Read More
Basketball hotspot Naomi Drenan, in Charlotte NC, has open gym Monday through Friday from 3pm to close, with the exception of when special events are held in the gym. The rec. is a popular neighborhood hang out which quickly fills up as soon as school lets out. There are also adult games on Saturday and Sunday mornings. On Fridays, recreation center staff hooks up the score board and runs full court games. If a full court game is not being played then patrons may use any of the six goals in the gym. Naomi Drenan’s gymnasium also has a large bleacher area and a stage. For sunny days, there are an additional four courts outside in the back of the...Read More
Growing up in Forsyth County, Georgia, I have always known about the Indian Seats on top of Sawnee Mountain. These seat-like rock formations are the stuff of local legend and offer breath-taking views of the Blue Ridge Mountain range beyond.
We skipped the visitor center and playground at the base of the trail, but be sure to stop in for information regarding Sawnee Mountain's Native American and gold mining history. Trail maps are also available in the visitor center, but trail destinations are clearly marked.
The Indian Seats Trail loop is five miles round trip. It is a moderate climb up the side of the mountain and winds through a canopy of trees. Once...Read More
During my ongoing discoveries of the photographic beauty of Northern California (I’m a recent transplant from the Midwest), I stumble across these small, sometimes hidden beaches that dot the Pacific coastline. One such recent discovery was the Cowell Ranch State Beach, just south of Half Moon Bay.
I got there early, and that was a good thing; the parking lot just off the Pacific Coast Highway is very small. From the parking lot, it was a half mile hike down a gravel access road through...Read More
